Where a career starts

You begin at 11, 12, 13 or 14 — you pick, or leave it random. Then you choose name, gender, nationality, starting country, birth city, primary foot and appearance.

There are two ways to set up your player:

• Quick — you pick your position directly from six options: goalkeeper, centre back, full back, midfielder, winger, forward.
• Natural — you pick up to three training focuses (speed and dribbling, physical and defence, technique and vision, reflex and concentration, finishing and positioning, discipline and leadership) and the game works out your position from them.

Your birthplace is a real fork, not flavour

The city you are born in carries a football culture rating and an academy access rating, and they do two concrete things:

They decide which tier you start in. Academy access above 62 and you start at an academy club. Below it and you start in amateur football. That is a genuinely different opening act, decided before you have kicked a ball.

They set your starting stats. Your base is 28 + (footballCulture + academyAccess) / 34, with bonuses to technique and vision if academy access is above 70 and a penalty below 40.

The game also tries to place you at a club in your own city first, then the geographically nearest city with a club, using real coordinates. Being born somewhere unfashionable is a real handicap you have to play out of.

Everyone also gets a generated four-paragraph backstory — opening, childhood, family, motivation — drawn deterministically from your seed, with a separate set of variants that only goalkeepers can get.

The shape of a season

A season is not one button press. It runs through five phases:

`` pre-season → mid first half → winter → mid second half → season end ``

Matches are simulated during the transitions, so when you arrive at a phase screen the results are already in and you decide with full information. The winter phase includes a mid-season transfer window — you can change clubs halfway through a season, and if you move to a different tier your league progress resets and the new league starts fresh.

Cup competitions run alongside as a shrinking bracket: 32 → 16 → 8 → 4 → 2. If you go out, the cup keeps going without you.

Where a career ends

This is the mechanic that makes My Legacy careers feel like lives rather than progress bars.

Every player has a hidden retirement age, derived at creation:

Clamped to 32–45.

What that means in practice:

• A disciplined, physically resilient player can still be playing past 40.
• A heavy gambler with a bad injury profile can be finished at 32.
• The random variation means two players with identical traits will not retire at the same age. You do not get to compute your own ending.

Retiring is your decision

The retire option appears once you are within three years of your personal cap. There is no floor — if your seeded cap is 33, you can retire from 30.

And there is no forced retirement. Collapsing stats and bad injuries are narrative pressure, not an eject button. If you want to play out a decline in a lower division, the game lets you.

Free agent off-ramp: if you have been unsigned for two or more seasons, an early retirement option opens up at any age, with its own ending.

The 14 legacy labels

When you retire, your whole career is scored and given a primary label plus secondary ones:

Each has its own scoring function. Club Legend, for example: ten or more seasons at one club scores 60 points, eight seasons 50, six seasons 30; +20 if you were captain there; +20 for five or more trophies, +10 for two or more. Capped at 100.

Note what that means. You cannot chase every label at once — Club Legend and Wandering Footballer are structurally opposed, and so are Money Emperor and Philanthropist Star. The label you get is a description of the life you actually lived.

The retirement screen itself has fifteen sections: club stints, family bonds, financial legacy, individual awards, legacy moments, media legacy, news headlines, records, season archive, team trophies, and a shareable card.

Playing for a long career

The retirement formula is the strategy guide. Four traits move it:

• Professionalism is the biggest single lever (0.10 per point above 50).
• Physical resilience is second (0.08).
• Gambling risk costs you above 30 — the casino minigames are not free in the long run, even with fictional currency.
• Injury proneness costs you 0.05 per point, and this is where morale comes in: low morale raises injury risk by up to 315%, and injuries accumulate.

The compounding version: keeping morale above 70 protects you from injuries, injuries feed injury history, and injury history is what shortens careers. Managing your mood is a longevity strategy.
